Monthly Bookkeeping for
Anchorage Businesses.

Clean monthly books are what keep a seasonal economy profitable. Here is how monthly bookkeeping fits the businesses driving the Anchorage economy, inside the Municipality of Anchorage.

Anchorage is a unified home-rule borough — the city and the borough are the same government, so there is no separate borough layer to deal with. Roughly 40 percent of all Alaskans live here, and the small businesses filling Downtown, Midtown, Spenard, South Anchorage, and Eagle River run on thin margins and heavy transaction volume. A clean monthly profit and loss statement is the difference between guessing and knowing.

The Municipality is also a logistics and energy hub. Ted Stevens Anchorage International ranks among the busiest air-cargo airports on the planet, JBER anchors a deep defense-support economy, and the oil and gas corporate offices, healthcare systems, and Alaska Native regional corporations headquartered here feed thousands of supporting vendors. Freight brokers, machine shops, staffing firms, and IT consultants all need books that handle project revenue, multiple accounts, and complicated payroll without falling behind.

And then there is construction and the trades. From the Glenn Highway and Seward Highway corridors to Minnesota Drive and the Eagle River build-out, Anchorage contractors, real estate teams, and home-service businesses stay busy through a short, intense building season. Tides delivers your reconciliations, profit and loss, and balance sheet every month, fully remote. Want the full local picture? See our Anchorage bookkeeping services page.

The Alaska Tax Reality

Alaska Sales Tax,
Handled Monthly.

No state sales tax. No state income tax. But more than 100 boroughs and cities levy their own sales tax, and where you sell decides what you owe. Here is what that means for a Anchorage business.

Here is the fact that surprises most owners: Anchorage has no general local sales tax (as of 2026 — confirm the current rule with the Municipality). Alaska has no statewide sales tax either, so if every dollar you collect is collected inside the Municipality, there is likely no sales-tax return to file at all. That does not mean sales tax is a non-issue. If you deliver or ship into Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Bethel, or the Kenai Peninsula, those jurisdictions do levy their own tax, and once you cross $100,000 in gross statewide sales you register and file through the Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission (ARSSTC). The 200-transaction test was removed effective January 1, 2025, so gross sales are the only trigger now.

Rates and thresholds above are current to the best of our knowledge as of 2026 and are provided for general information only. Local ordinances change — confirm the current rate with your borough or city before you rely on it. Tides provides bookkeeping, not tax advice or tax filing.

What's Included

Every Month, Without
Exception.

Monthly bookkeeping is not just transaction entry. Here is everything that happens behind the scenes every month, so you never have to think about it.

Transaction Categorization

Every deposit, payment, and transfer is categorized correctly — including the freight and fuel costs that dominate Alaska expense ledgers. Nothing gets lumped under "miscellaneous."

Bank & Credit Card Reconciliation

Every account matched to the statement, penny for penny. Discrepancies are found and resolved before your report goes out.

Local Sales-Tax Tracking

Taxable and exempt sales split in the ledger, the sales-tax liability account reconciled, and your gross statewide sales watched against the ARSSTC threshold.

Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet

A clean, readable P&L and balance sheet every month — the reports that tell you whether a big season actually turned into profit.

What Happens Without
Monthly Bookkeeping.

Most owners know their books are behind. Here is what that actually costs — and why catching up once a year is not the same as staying current.

😩

Tax Season Chaos

Digging through twelve months of transactions in February costs time, money, and nerve. Your CPA bills extra for cleanup, and you miss deductions you would have caught if records were current.

📉

The Season Lies to You

A huge July feels like proof the business works. Without monthly books you have no idea whether the year net out ahead once the slow months and the freight bills are counted.

🧾

Sales-Tax Surprises

Local returns filed from memory, a liability account nobody reconciled, and an ARSSTC threshold you crossed six months ago without noticing.

😰

Loan & Investor Roadblocks

Banks and investors require accurate, current statements. If your books are six months behind, you cannot move fast when an opportunity shows up.

Common Questions

Monthly Bookkeeping
FAQ

Everything Anchorage business owners ask before getting started.

At the close of each month, we connect to your bank feeds, categorize all transactions, reconcile every account, and generate your profit and loss statement and balance sheet. We email you your reports, clean and ready to use. The entire process runs in the background. You do not need to provide anything unless we have a specific question about a transaction, which is rare.
No. We set up QuickBooks Online as part of onboarding at no extra cost. If you are already using it, we clean it up and take over. If you are on a different platform or using nothing at all, we migrate you or set you up from scratch. We also connect Puzzle.io for real-time dashboards, giving you visibility into your books any time.
Alaska businesses live with them. Fishing openers, cruise season, the summer building window, aurora season, and the PFD payout in the fall all move money in ways a Lower 48 template does not anticipate. Monthly books give you a clear picture of what each month actually earned and what it actually cost, so a strong summer does not get spent before a slow winter arrives, and so quarterly estimated tax payments are based on real earnings instead of optimism.
Yes, and in Alaska it matters more than almost anywhere. Freight and fuel are core cost drivers, not incidental expenses, and when they get buried in a catch-all account your cost of goods and your true margin are both wrong. We give freight its own treatment in the chart of accounts so you can see what it is actually doing to your unit economics.
We handle bookkeeping, not tax filing. We keep your records tax-ready all year and deliver a fully organized, CPA-ready package at year-end. Most clients save meaningfully on their CPA bill because there is no cleanup work required. If you need a CPA referral, we are happy to connect you with one.
We use flat monthly pricing based on your business volume, specifically transaction count and number of connected accounts. There are no hourly rates and no setup fees. The best way to get an exact number is to schedule a free 15-minute call. We will review your current setup and give you a firm monthly quote on the spot.
Yes. Catch-up bookkeeping is part of onboarding. We go back as far as needed, months or years, and bring your books current before your first monthly cycle starts. Catch-up is priced separately based on the volume of work, but it is always completed before ongoing monthly service begins.
As of 2026, the Municipality of Anchorage levies no general local sales tax, and Alaska has no statewide sales tax — so for sales made entirely inside Anchorage there is usually nothing to collect or file. Confirm current rules with the Municipality, since local ordinances change. Where it does get complicated is remote selling: if you ship or deliver into jurisdictions that do tax (Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Bethel, the Kenai Peninsula and many others) and you cross $100,000 in gross statewide sales, you register and file through the Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission (ARSSTC). The old 200-transaction test was removed effective January 1, 2025. We track the taxable-by-jurisdiction split in your books so the question is answered by data, not memory.
Yes. We serve businesses across the entire Municipality of Anchorage — Downtown, Midtown, Spenard, South Anchorage, and Eagle River — entirely online from our office in Greenville, South Carolina. Your books connect through secure bank feeds and QuickBooks Online, so there is nothing to drop off and no in-person meetings required. Time zone is not a problem: we work asynchronously and answer email the same or next business day.
