Irmo's Business Scene

A Suburban
Commercial Hub on
the Lake Murray Gateway.

Sitting on the northwest edge of the Columbia metro, Irmo punches well above its 12,000-resident population. The Harbison corridor draws daytime traffic from across the Midlands, while Lake Murray Boulevard funnels lake-bound residents and visitors past hundreds of locally-owned businesses every weekend.

Irmo straddles Richland and Lexington counties — meaning local business owners juggle two sets of property tax bills, two business license schedules, and a real estate market driven by lake demand. Clean books and clear reporting make every one of those moving parts simpler.

🌊

Lake Murray Gateway

Irmo sits at the front door of one of South Carolina's largest lakes — driving property management, marine services, hospitality, and weekend retail traffic year-round.

🛍️

Harbison Commercial Corridor

Anchored by Columbiana Centre and the Harbison Boulevard retail strip, this is one of the densest commercial submarkets in the Columbia metro.

🏘️

Two-County Suburb

Irmo straddles Richland and Lexington counties — which means local owners have to track filings, licenses, and tax bills across both jurisdictions.

📍 About Irmo, SC

The Town Behind the Business.

Irmo isn't just a zip code on the way to Lake Murray — it's a long-established Midlands community with its own neighborhoods, employers, and economy. Knowing how it works is how we serve our clients better.

History & Economic Growth

Irmo was incorporated in 1890 as a railway stop on the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens line. The name itself is a combination — pulled from the surnames of two railway officials, Iredell and Moseley — and that railroad heritage shaped the town's early commercial center along what is now St. Andrews Road.

The completion of the Lake Murray Dam in 1930 turned Irmo's geography into its biggest economic engine. As one of the largest reservoirs in the Southeast filled up just to the west, Irmo became the gateway: where lake residents stopped for groceries, fuel, and dinner on the way home from the water. Decades of suburban growth from Columbia followed, and the Harbison development in the 1980s established the commercial corridor that still drives the town today.

Today Irmo is anchored by the strong Lexington-Richland 5 school district, a deep base of suburban professional services, and steady inflow from the lake economy — all of which means more small business owners who need clean books to grow.

★★★★★

"I run a property management company for lake homes around Irmo, and the books were always the worst part of the month. Tides took it off my plate completely. I get clean reports every month, my CPA loves the handoff at tax time, and I can finally see how the business is actually doing. Total game-changer."
